Pain assessment, administration of pain medication, and evaluation of patients’ responses to medications all fall within nurses’ daily scope of practice. The goal of pain management is to minimize its effects on an individual’s functioning and quality of life .Understanding the biology of pain with its neurochemical changes and the influence of subjective variables, such as how individuals describe and rate their pain, helps nurses develop effective pain management plans.

Since the American Pain Society introduced the concept of pain as the fifth vital sign, nurses have become more aware of its importance. However, use and abuse of pain relievers has become an increasing concern, and nurses’ awareness of the intricate relationship among pain, pain management, and addiction is still insufficient.

In addition to describing the physiology, pathophysiology, and psychology of pain and discussing types of pain, this course examines the pathology of an addicted brain, with special attention given to opioid medications and the inherent danger of misuse, abuse, and diversion.

The current crisis with opioid addiction has made it imperative that all healthcare providers have the knowledge and expertise to monitor patients for signs and symptoms of addiction, and be able deal effectively with addiction. This course provides nurses with a clear understanding of the mechanisms behind pain and addiction and how, without careful monitoring and timely intervention, pain treatment can lead to addiction. After completing this course, nurses will recognize the factors that intertwine pain management with addiction and be able to apply this knowledge to their relevant practice settings.

Judi Daniels, PhD, APRN, completed her MSN/FNP at Michigan State University and earned a PhD in nursing at the University of Kentucky in 2004. Throughout her nursing career she has had a variety of clinical experiences. She is dual board certified in family medicine and pediatrics and is on the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. She was named medical director of the Chronic Opioid Assessment and Treatment Clinic in 2016. She has presented on the opioid epidemic and numerous other topics, published extensively, and been recognized as an outstanding nurse educator.

Germin Fahim, PharmD, BCPS, completed her doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree at Jefferson School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, She completed a postgraduate year 1 residency at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, New York. Her postgraduate year 2 residency specialized in drug information at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, which is affiliated with Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. After completing 2 years of residency, Dr. Fahim accepted a position as clinical assistant professor at Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University where she co-teaches various courses including Drug Information. Additionally, she precepts sixth-year PharmD students at her practice site, Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, where she also performs regular pain rounds with an advance practice registered nurse. She is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

Antoinette Towle EdD, PNP-BC, SNP-BC, is an assistant professor at Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT, and an American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) Board Certified advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in the specialty areas of Pediatric and School Health. Dr. Towle has worked as a professional nurse for more than 30 years, in a variety of capacities (Administrator, Manager, Director, Case Worker, APRN, RN, and Educator) and within a wide variety of healthcare setting (schools, residential settings for children and the elderly, veterans hospitals, insurance companies, federal and privately funded medical offices and hospitals, and community healthcare agencies). Presently, Dr. Towle teaches both graduate and undergraduate nursing students full time, with a focus on nursing leadership; understanding, respecting, and appreciating cultural diversity; health promotion; and integration of these key components into clinical practice. She is the first to create and continue to lead a nursing study program abroad for students at the University of Jamaica, China, and Armenia.
