This course reflects the expanded role of today’s nurse as a leader, a manager, an educator, and an economist. The course begins with an overview of leading and managing, describing leadership styles for nurse managers and staff nurses and discussing networking and leadership in professional organizations. The discussion of resource management includes topics such as staffing, budgeting, and scheduling. Tools for decision making and problem solving are provided, as well as resources for coping with burnout and work-related stress. Nurses will learn about strategic planning and organizational design structures, and the discussion of team building describes cohesive teams, management of team meetings, and shared governance. Patient-centered care is described, including communication, the use of technology, and empowerment of both nurses and patients. Nursing roles such as mentoring and coaching are discussed. Participants will learn about creating a powerful image and understanding politics in nursing. Legal considerations, such as malpractice, confidentiality, and employment laws, are described. Case studies are provided throughout the course.
